Fade Lab

Fade-only studio · Muggenhof, Nürnberg

Skin. Drop. Burst. Taper.

Fades only. Measured in millimetres.

Four fades. Nine guards. One tolerance: half a millimetre. We do not cut anything else, which is exactly why the blend is clean.

01The twist

Guard Lab

Drag the guard from #0 to #8 and the fade on the model re-renders — the photographic texture swaps through our own nine-step reference sequence and the blend line moves with it. Decide the length here, before anyone touches your head.

02Four shapes

Fade types

Every cut in the studio is one of these four, plus the design work that sits on top of them. If you want something else, we will happily tell you who in Nürnberg does it better than we would.

01

Skin fade

Bare scalp at the bottom, no visible step anywhere.

The blade opens on skin and the length arrives gradually, with no shelf and no shadow line. It is the least forgiving thing we cut, which is why we cut it most. Book it every two to three weeks or it stops looking like one.

#310 mm

from €36

02

Drop fade

The blend curves down behind the ear instead of running level.

The fade line drops in an arc towards the nape, following the skull rather than the horizon. It flatters a round head shape and gives a heavy top somewhere to sit. Slightly slower to cut than a straight fade — the arc has to be symmetrical from both sides.

Starts at guard
#13 mm
Climbs to
#413 mm

from €38

03

Burst fade

A half circle radiating around the ear, the nape left long.

The fade fans out around the ear and stops, leaving the back weight intact. Grown from mullets and taper cuts, it is the one that reads loudest from the side. Works with strong curl patterns and with straight hair cut into a defined shape.

#13 mm

#413 mm

from €38

04

Taper

Only the perimeter shortens. From two metres away, nothing happened.

The quietest thing we do: sideburn, ear and nape brought down a few millimetres so the outline is clean and the length is untouched. The cut for people who need to look identical at work and better in photographs.

#619 mm

Fade + hair design

A freehand line, a parting or a geometric detail cut into the fade with the blade corner. Drawn on your head with a wax pencil first, cut second, and never freestyled without showing you the drawing. Booked as a longer slot because the layout takes as long as the fade.

Our guards are metric and unmarked, so we talk in millimetres rather than in brand numbers. Print this, screenshot it, or just say the number at the door.

The same guard reads differently on different hair

A number is a length, not a look. What changes between hair types is how that length behaves once the clipper is switched off — so we adjust the method, not the person.

01

Coily

Springs back against the scalp, so 6 mm sits closer than the number suggests. We lengthen the blend zone, work dry, and check the line with the head upright rather than tilted.

02

Curly

Shrinks by up to a third between wet and dry. We cut to the dry curl, take the blend in more passes, and leave the corner of the fade soft so the pattern can fall into it.

03

Wavy

The wave comes back two or three days after the cut. We leave the top of the blend a touch longer so the settled shape lands exactly where you saw it in the mirror.

04

Straight

Shows every step, which means the blend needs more passes rather than more product. Lightest guard changes, most flicking of the wrist, slowest section of the cut.

Prices

One price per shape. Longer, denser or more grown-out hair does not cost more here — the clock does not start again because your hair grew.

Barbers

Everyone here cuts fades all day, every day. Pick a chair or leave it to us — the guard number travels with the booking, not with the barber.

Milan Petrov

Founder · skin fades

Opened the studio in 2019 after eight years in a general salon where he was allowed to fade about twice a week. Cuts the bare-blade work and trains everyone else on it. Speaks German, English, Serbian.

Barber · tapers & drop fades

Came from a scissor-cut background, which is why her blends run so long and so quietly. Books out fastest for tapers and for anyone who wants the change to be invisible to their colleagues. Speaks German, English.

What people say

From the chair

4.9out of 5, from 214 reviews

  • I said guard two and got guard two. That sounds like the lowest possible bar and it is somehow still rare.

    Tobias K.

    Skin fade · Muggenhof

  • First place that asked about my curl pattern before picking up the clippers instead of after.

    Amara D.

    Burst fade · Gostenhof

  • The slider on this site is the reason I booked. I came in already knowing what I wanted and it took four minutes to agree on it.

    Sven M.

    Low taper · Fürth

  • Thirty-eight minutes, no small talk unless I start it, and the back is straight when I check it at home. Perfect.

Questions

Do you really only cut fades?
Yes. Fades, tapers, the design work that sits on them, and beard blends into a fade. No scissor cuts, no colour, no perms, no children's first haircuts. If you ask for something we do not do, you will get a name and a phone number instead of a shrug.
What if I do not know my guard number?
Then use the Guard Lab on this page, or turn up and say so. We keep a physical reference board by the chair with all nine lengths cut into it, and we will hold the guard against your head before anything is switched on.
How long does a fade last?
A skin fade reads sharp for about 10 to 14 days and grows out honestly after that. A taper survives four to six weeks. Anything shorter than guard two is a commitment to coming back.
Can I book a specific barber?
Yes, in the booking form. If your barber is unavailable at your preferred time we will offer another chair rather than silently reassign you — your guard spec is recorded on the booking either way.
Do you take walk-ins?
When a slot is free, yes, but we run on 38-minute appointments and Saturdays are usually full by Thursday. Call the studio rather than making the journey on hope.
What if the fade is not what I asked for?
Tell us in the chair, not on the internet. Anything we can correct on the day, we correct on the day, at no cost. If it needs length to grow back first, the corrective appointment is free within 14 days.
